Harold Eugene Bruntjen, 85, of Harvel, died on Friday, Nov. 18, 2022, in Springfield.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, Nov. 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Christian Church near Raymond. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Nov. 23, beginning at 10 a.m. at the church with pastors Greg Busboom and Linda Strader of St. John’s Lutheran Church co-officiating. Interment will follow at Harvel Cemetery. Hough Funeral Home in Raymond is assisting the family.

Mr. Bruntjen was born May 22, 1937, in Harvel, to Melvin Edward and Helen Anna (Johnson) Bruntjen. He married Darlene House on Sept. 13, 1958, at. St. James Lutheran Church in Harvel, and she survives.

He was a graduate of SIU-Carbondale, where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in ag education. A farmer most of his life, he also taught school and served as principal in Waggoner.

Mr. Bruntjen served in the U.S. Air Force ROTC Program during the Berlin Crisis of 1961.

He most recently served on the Bug River Water Drainage District Board and in the past, had served on many other community boards, including Rural Electric, First National Bank of Raymond Board, Harvel Fire Protection Board and St. James Lutheran Church Board.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Bruntjen is survived by his children, Barton (wife Lynette) Bruntjen of St. Charles, Lori (husband Roy) Bruntjen-Carter of Springfield and Kirby (wife Rita) Bruntjen of Harvel; grandchildren, Katie Bruntjen, Clayton Bruntjen, Ryan Bruntjen, Carter (wife Emma) Bruntjen, Olivia Carter, Colton Carter and Karly Bruntjen; brother, Carl Bruntjen of Waggoner; and sister, Mary Snyder of Raymond.
