Flossie Lorraine Bandy, 88, of Springfield, formerly of Irving and Coffeen, died on Monday, March 20, at 11:55 a.m. after a difficult, but short battle with cancer.

In the days prior and up to her death, she was surrounded and comforted by her family.

Mrs. Bandy was born Sept. 15, 1934, to Helen and Joseph Baker. She married Willis Bandy, and together, they had three children. She later married Arthur Matthews in March 1998, whom she deeply loved, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 5, 2020.

A burial service will be held for both Mrs. Bandy and Mr. Matthews on Saturday, March 25, beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Cedar Ridge Cemetery in Honey Bend with Clint Weir officiating. Hough and Sons Funeral Home in Hillsboro is assisting the family.

Mrs. Bandy was the rock of her family and loved them fiercely, as well as her animals and Jimmy Swaggart. She was loyal, funny and selfless. Her faith was strong and she strived to help others come to believe.

She is survived by two brothers, Donald Baker of Litchfield and Charles (Beulah) Baker of Springfield; children, Rex (former daughter-in-law Joyce) Bandy of Irving and Susan (former son-in-law Walter) Boyd of Fairview Heights; grandchildren, April Hall of Owatonna, MN, Tracy (Brad) Donald of O’Fallon, Justin (Linsay) Watkins of Sheboygan, WI, Joseph (Amie) Bandy of Edwardsville and Britney (Taylor) Easton of Springfield; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Bandy was preceded in death by her parents; infant son, Roger Dale; two brothers, Estil and Frankie; and one sister, Della.

Arthur Jesse Matthews, 86, of Irving, died peacefully in his sleep on Nov. 5, 2020, at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, days after being diagnosed with cancer.

Mr. Matthews was born Nov. 22, 1933, to Oral “Matty” and Hazel (Hankins) Matthews. His siblings include Sherry Brossard, Sonna Reener, Delores Huckaby, Tracy Matthews, Rodger Matthews and Kenneth Mattews. He married Flossie Bandy in March 1998.

He was a hard worker, proudly driving semis all over America and parts of Canada for numerous years. He also owned his own lawn mowing business. He loved driving around out in the country, fishing and his wife. His loud, deep laugh is greatly missed.

Mr. Matthews had several children, including Dennis, Rex and Susan, as well as grandchildren, April Hall, Tracy (Brad) Donald, Justin (Linsay) Watkins, Joseph (Amie) Bandy and Britney (Taylor) Easton. He was the best grandpa.
