Dennis M. O’Malley, 82, of Nokomis, died on Monday, Jan. 9, 2023, at 3:10 a.m. at Springfield Memorial Hospital.

Visitation will be held Saturday, Jan. 14, from 9 to 11 a.m. at St. Louis Catholic Church in Nokomis. Funeral Mass will follow, beginning at 11 a.m. at the church with Father Michael Meinhart officiating. Interment will be held at St. Louis Catholic Cemetery in Nokomis. The family asks the public to wear their favorite sports attire to the service. Sutton Memorial Home in Nokomis is assisting the family.

Mr. O’Malley was born Sept. 29, 1940, in Witt, the son of Wm and Celia Bertha (Brown) O’Malley. He married Doris on Feb. 6, 1965, at the St. Louis Catholic Church in Nokomis, and she survives.

He was a 1958 graduate of Nokomis High School and joined the U.S. Navy shortly after.

Mr. O’Malley was a member and founder of the Nokomis Bowling Association and was an avid golfer. He ran his own golf tournament, The O’Malley Open, for 25 years. He loved boating, Illinois and The Chicago Cubs.

He retired in 2000 after working as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.

In addition to his wife, Mr. O’Malley is survived by his daughter, Michelle (Jeff) Kimbro of Caitlin; sons, Dennis (Rosalind) O’Malley of Nokomis and Daniel (Kim) O’Malley of Bingham; grandchildren, Josh and Jenny Kimbro, Amber (Bryant) Wright, Nick O’Malley, Taylor (Beau) Hutchison, Tylor (Alexis) Knisley and Spencer O’Malley; great-grandchildren, Brody, Baylor and Brynn Wright and Isaac and Greta Hutchison; and brother, Donald O’Malley of Decatur.

He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Ayden O’Malley; sister, Dorothy Ann Kottwitz; and brothers, Billy, Gerald and Chuck O’Malley.
