Thomas G. Terneus, 80, formerly of Hillsboro, died on Sunday, June 9, 2024, at home in Chesterfield, MO.
A private graveside memorial and joint celebration of life for Mr. Terneus and his wife, Carole, will be held later, providing an opportunity for family and friends to unite and honor Mr. Terneus’ memory. Schrader Funeral Home and Crematory in Ballwin, MO, is assisting the family.
He was born on July 24, 1943, in Hillsboro. Mr. Terneus’s life was a journey of remarkable achievements and cherished memories. He left his mark on the athletic legacy of Hillsboro High School, where he helped to lead his team to the state basketball tournament as point guard, while also lettering in baseball and track. His pursuit of higher education at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and his graduation in 1968 with a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville are testaments to his dedication and hard work.
With a passion for finance and a drive for success, Mr. Terneus embarked on a distinguished 30-plus-year career in the savings and loan industry. He started in the home loan department of Hamiltonian Federal Savings and Loan Bank, and his dedication and expertise led him to the role of senior vice president of national loan operations at Home Savings of America. Here, he significantly contributed to the organization’s growth and success, including leading the consolidation of loan processing operations in the mid-1990s at a state-of-the-art facility in Maryland Heights, MO. His career was a testament to his hard work and commitment to excellence.
He enjoyed fishing and watching the St. Louis Cardinals, the University of Illinois Fighting Illini, and, most of all, his grandchildren. His teachings on persistence, hard work and perseverance, as well as his homemade cookies and rice crispy treats, were special gifts for his family.
Mr. Terneus, a beacon of love and family devotion, was a husband for 55 years of Carole (Ronk) Terneus. His deep bond with his daughters, Tammy Legate and Tessa Buescher, was a testament to his role as a father. His sons-in-law, Brian Legate and Dr. Troy Buescher, revered him as a mentor and role model in parenthood and career success. He found immense joy as a grandfather to Austin (Rachel) Buescher, Katie Legate, Jacob Legate, Christie Legate, Chase Buescher and Tara Buescher. The arrival of his great-grandson, Scott Ramey, filled his heart with even more love and happiness. He is also survived by his brother, Vernon “Bud” Terneus of Hillsboro; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by wife Carole; parents, brothers, and sisters, Larry Terneus, Dorothy Gunn, Jack Terneus and Mickie Gaither, preceded him in death.
Mr. Terneus’ legacy will forever resonate in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. His kindness, wisdom and unwavering love will be dearly missed, but fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Hillsboro Community Unit School District #3 Educational Foundation, 1311 Vandalia Road, Hillsboro, IL 62049. This is a fitting way to recognize Mr. Terneus’ enduring connection to his alma mater and continue his support of education and high school sports.
