Whether it was exhaustion from the doubleheader the night before, vengeance on the part of Mt. Olive after a 4-2 loss on April 27, or a little of both, Thursday’s meeting between Morrisonville and the Wildcats did not go in the Mohawks favor.
After Morrisonville opened the scoring with a solo run in the bottom of the second, Mt. Olive scored the next nine runs en route to a 19-5 shellacking of the Mohawks.
Morrisonville got their first run after Braden Whalen singled, stole second and scored on a wild pitch, one of the few mistakes Mt. Olive starter Carter Monke would make on the night.
Down 1-0, the Wildcats began to get to Morrisonville starter Christian Tapia in the third inning, turning four singles into three runs to take the lead.
The three-run frame sparked the Wildcats, who scored four more off Tapia in the fourth inning. Nate Brockmeyer would come on in relief and gave up two more runs, but Morrisonville got one of those back on a solo homer by Jhadyn Walker to right field that made it 9-2.
Hoping to end the game early, Mt. Olive scored three times in the top of the sixth to make it 12-2, with a two-run triple by Monke the highlight of the inning.
Morrisonville would manage to extend the game after Will Jenkins walked, stole second and third and scored on an RBI single by Michael Jones, but the run seemed to just make the Wildcats hungry for more as they plated seven more runs in the seventh inning.
Dominic Golitko would drive in two runs in the bottom of the seventh of a single that plated Cade Bethard and Jhadyn Walker, but a ground ball to short ended hopes for a miracle comeback.
Both Walker and Jones would have two hits for Morrisonville, who was outhit 19-7 in the game.
The loss dropped the Mohawks to 5-6 on the year. They will start the week at home with Taylorville on May 10 and Hillsboro on May 11.
