A doubles sweep kept the Hillsboro girls tennis team from a win on Thursday, Sept. 9, as the Toppers fell to Vandalia 5-4 at the Hillsboro Sports Complex.
Hillsboro held a 4-2 advantage after singles play, getting wins in the number one match and the four through six matches.
Two of those wins came in straight sets as Paige Lucykow defeated Gracie Philpot 6-3, 6-4 in the number one match, while Macy Shipman beat Faith Bundy-Clymer 6-1, 6-0 in the number four match. In the number five match, Melissa Bell lost her first set to Carlie Graumenz 6-4, but rallied back to win the second set, 6-4, and the tie-breaker, 10-6. Jesse Balla picked up a 6-3 win over Zoe Laqua in the first set of their match in the number six bout, but fell 6-4 in game two. In the tie-breaker, Balla sealed the win with a 10-5 victory over Laqua.
Doubles would belong to the Vandals, though, as Philpot and Ferranto beat Lucykow and Sally Mattson 8-2 in the number one match, while Graumenz and Laqua defeated Bell and Balla by the same score in the number three match. Ruthie Mathews and Macy Shipman would come a little closer in the number two match, but the team of Victoria Smith and Delanee Ward still managed to pull out the 8-4 win to pick up the team victory.
Hillsboro will try to rebound on Tuesday, Sept. 14, when they play at East Alton-Wood River.
