Toppers Take 12th At Indian Springs Tourney

Posted

The parking lot at the Indian Springs Golf Course in Fillmore was full on Friday, Aug. 13, with some unfamiliar names on the busses that dotted the gravel lot.

Visitors from Robinson, Marshall and Oblong, plus several others, made the trip to the 18-hole jewel just over the Montgomery County border for the St. Anthony Invitational, hosted by the Effingham-based private school.

Not everyone had as long of a trip, though, as the Hillsboro Hiltoppers were also in the 18-team field on the warm August morning.

A day after finishing fifth in the 10-team Taylorville Invitational, the Toppers took 12th in a stacked field at Indian Springs, shooting a 369 on the par-70 course.

Dillon Smail, part of the core returning group of seniors for Hillsboro, shot an 89 on Friday to tie for 36th overall. Smail, who shot a 43 on the front nine and a 46 on the back half of the course, was Hillsboro’s low man for the tournament, 10 strokes behind Brandon Reed of Father McGivney and Konnor Kueper of Breese Central for the last two spots in the top 10.

Fellow senior Drake Vogel and freshman Tycen Thacker would be just behind Smail with a pair of 90s on the day. Vogel shot a 43 on the front nine and a 47 on the back, while Thacker carded rounds of 45 for both halves of the course as the pair tied for 41st overall.

Hillsboro’s fourth scoring round came from Preston Lyerla, who was low man the day before with an 86. The shots weren’t falling as well on Friday as the senior shot a 100 (a 49 on the front and a 51 on the back) to round out the scoring.

Two strokes behind Lyerla was sophomore Austin Loskot, who shaved 11 strokes off his score at Taylorville from the day before. Loskot shot a 53 on the front half, but did better on the back nine, carding a 49.

Vandalia, who joined Hillsboro and Greenville as the closest visitors for the tournament, took the top two spots individually with Chase Laack (71) and Connor McCall (73). The Vandals matched St. Anthony’s top team in the team standings with a team score of 316, but the Bulldogs won the fifth score tiebreaker, with Joey Trupiano shooting a 87, compared to Jacob Schaal carding a 98 for the Vandalia.

Another tournament is on the horizon for the Toppers as they play at the Hickory Stick Invitational, hosted by East Alton-Wood River, on Monday, Aug. 16, at Belk Park Golf Course.
