The talent overflowed from the fairways of the Litchfield Country Club on Tuesday, Aug. 31, as the Purple Panthers hosted Vandalia, Lincolnwood, Gillespie and Taylorville at their home course.
The Vandals showed why they are one of the teams to contend with for the IHSA Class 1A state title, shooting a 6-over-par 146 as a team, with 20 pars and eight birdies spread between the five Vandalia players’ 45 holes.
The county contingent showed that they are capable of competing with the areas best as Litchfield shot a 163 and Lincolnwood carded a 172, despite missing two of their top six. Taylorville and Gillespie took the fourth and fifth spots for the match, shooting a 198 and a 219 respectively.
The round of the day for Litchfield came from Tug Schwab, who shot a 1-over-par 36 to finish a stroke behind co-medalists Chase Laack and Dylan Halford, who both had four pars and three birdies on the day. Schwab bogied the number one hole, but rebounded with eight straight pars, the most of any player.
The rest of the Panthers would play well too, with the next five all finishing in the low to mid 40s. Kelvin Dooley and Zach Boston both shot 42 on the day, while Keagan Marten added in the fourth scoring round with a 43.
Just off the pace were A.J. Odle and Ian Otto, who finished with scores of 45 and 46, with two pars each.
The consistency of the Panthers continued on into the JV squad, who also played and shot a 183. Brawly Jacobs led the second team with a 43 and it stair-stepped down from there with a 44 from Ryan Baugher and a 45 from Allen Schneider. Zach Leitschuh (51), Clayton Bishop (54) and Tyler Thompson (56) also played for the JV Panthers.
Lincolnwood was led by the combo of Nate Brockmeyer and Brady Schmedeke, who shot 38 and 40 to finish in the top seven. Brockmeyer had four pars and finished strongly by going par-par-birdie on the final three holes to tie Vandalia’s Conner McCall and Jacob Schaal for fourth place. Schmedeke finished in similar fashion, with three of his four pars and his one birdie coming in the final four holes.
Seniors Colton Tischkau and Michael Graham had the other two scoring rounds with a pair of 47s, while Lance Weitekamp and Drew Gilpin shot 50 and 55 for the day. The Lancers were without Levi Weir and Will Jenkins, who are playing both golf and soccer this year and helped the Lincolnwood soccer team to a 4-0 win over Staunton.
With the results from Tuesday, Lincolnwood moved to 11-4 on the season, while Litchfield improved to 9-3. The Vandals are 6-0 with several solid tournament finishes under their belts as well.
To wrap up the week, Lincolnwood will host Carlinville, Carrollton and Shelbyville at Shoal Creek Golf Course in Raymond, while Litchfield will be off until next Tuesday, Sept. 7, when they play Taylorville, Auburn and South County at Lake Shore Golf Course in Taylorville.
