It was the final home game of the season for the Nokomis High School volleyball team and the Redskins made sure the Nokomis faithful’s final thought was a good one.
The Skins picked up their fifth MSM Conference win and their 10th victory overall with a 25-21, 25-18 win over Calvary on Oct. 19.
Game one against the Saints was tooth and nail in the early going, with the two teams standing tied at 4-4, 5-5, 6-6, 7-7 and 9-9. Calvary would begin to pick up the pace after that, building their lead up to three (14-11) and four (18-14) to put the Redskins in a hole.
Nokomis began their comeback after that though, clawing their way to within one, 18-17, before Calvary took a time out to regroup. The Saints would score the next point, but Nokomis picked up the next three and took the lead for the first time since it was 9-8 in the home team’s favor.
Calvary would tie the game at 20-20, but Nokomis scored five of the next six points to come away with the four-point win.
In game two, Nokomis would lead wire-to-wire, starting the contest off with three straight points and building up a 10-3 lead. After that, the margin stayed in the five-to-six point range, with Calvary never getting any closer than four the rest of the way out.
Hailey Engelman did everything but sell popcorn at the concession stand for the Redskins as she led the team in points, kills, digs and was second in assists. Engelman finished the game with seven points, five kills, five assists and 11 digs, helping Nokomis move to 5-3 in the MSM Conference.
Addison Dangbar, Audrey Sabol and Rean Ward added in four kills apiece, while Presley Lamb led Nokomis in assists with seven.
Sabol chipped in six points in the serving game, while Skylar Stewart added five, Natalie Engelman finished with three and Dangbar added two.
Defensively, Emily Cress and Dangbar joined Engelman with double-digit digs, posting 10 apiece, while Stewart had five blocks and Sabol chipped in three.
The win improved Nokomis’ record to 10-17 on the season and moved Coach Megan Mehochko within two of 200 for her career.
She will have five chances to collect those two wins this weekend as the Redskins play in the Pawnee Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 23. Nokomis is in Pool A with Athens (9:15 a.m.), Pawnee (10:15 a.m.) and Edinburg (1:15 p.m.) with the medal rounds starting at 2:15 p.m. and culminating with the championship and third place game at 5:15 p.m.
The Edinburg game will be the third of four meetings between the two clubs, with Nokomis downing the Wildcats 25-20, 25-21 in the Montgomery County Invitational and 25-20, 25-18, on Oct. 12, in MSM Conference play. Round four will be on the Wildcats’ home floor on Oct. 25, at 6:30 p.m. in the first round of the Edinburg Regional.
