The Litchfield boys cross country team opened their season at the Carlinville Early Meet on Tuesday, Aug. 31, finishing fourth as a team with a trio of top 25 finishes in the 93-runner field.
The Purple Panthers accumulated 125 points to finish in the upper half of the nine-team pack. Only Pana (94), Lincoln (54) and champion Rochester (32) had lower point totals.
The trio of Camden Quarton, Sam Horn and Gavin Thimsen led Litchfield, each clocking in under 21 minutes. Quarton topped that list with a 15th place finish, running a 19:43.89, one of 16 runners to break 20 minutes. Only three runners broke 18 minutes on the day, led by Brenden Heitzig of Lincoln, who finished first with a 17:28.27, 18 seconds ahead of Jerseyville’s Cole Martinez.
The next two Panthers would cross in 40 seconds and 20 seconds after that. Sam Horn ran a 20:20.77 to finish 19th, while Gavin Thimsen ran a 20:41.74 to finish 22nd.
Alex DeLaCruz and Kenny Traylor had the other scoring finishes for Litchfield as they ran 21:32.45 and 21:43.92 to finish 34th and 37th respectively. Peyton Baugher also ran for the Panthers, finishing 78th with a time of 27:15.52.
Litchfield will run again on Saturday, Sept. 11, at the PORTA Invite.
