Panthers, Toppers Go 1-2 At Girls Track Meet

Posted

After Mother Nature washed out Litchfield’s attempts to host their meet on Tuesday, May 18, the Panthers were finally able to get on the track on Wednesday, May 19, as they welcomed Hillsboro and Greenville to town.

The Litchfield girls would take first in the meet, accumulating 68 points to beat Hillsboro by 18 and Greenville by 54.

The Lady Panthers would come out on top in 10 events, including all three relays they participated in, the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400. They would also claim victories on the track in the 200, with Sarah Yakana running a 27.8; the 400, with Kendall Stewart running a 1:06.0; and the 800, with Emma Dively running a 2:45.7.

Their other win on the track came in the 100-meter hurdles, where Carson Lemon ran a 17.9 to take first. The win was one of two individual honors the senior took on Wednesday, with the other coming in pole vault, where she cleared 2.6 meters.

Sarah Yakana also had two wins on the day as she earned first in the long jump with a mark of 4.76 meters, to go along with her win in the 200.

Litchfield’s other victory in the field events went to Emma Hughes, who threw 19.67 meters in the discus to take first overall.

Hillsboro Girls

While the Hillsboro team is limited in numbers this year, what they lack in quantity, they make up for in quality. On Wednesday, the Toppers claimed five firsts and didn’t have a competitor finish lower than fourth in their event.

On the track, Sierra Compton swept the distance events, running a 6:17.5 in the 1600 and a 13:24.3 in the 3200. The Toppers also finished one-two in the 100 meter dash, with Ashlynn Papin edging teammate Paitynn Wilson 13.7 to 13.9.

In the field events, Meagan White won the shot put with a mark of 8.92, while Kaci Papin edged Carly Guinn of Litchfield in the high jump. Both athletes cleared 1.57 meters in the event, but Papin did so in fewer attempts to earn the victory.

Both teams will be in Pana on Thursday, May 27, for the South Central Conference meet. The two are split up for sectionals, with Litchfield going to the Class 1A North Mac Sectional on June 2 and Hillsboro going to the Class 2A East Alton-Wood River Sectional on June 4
