Miners Beat Lancers For 7th

Posted

Both Lincolnwood and Gillespie entered the final day of the Carlinville Holiday Tournament in search of their first win at the annual event. The Lancers were 0-3 in a loaded Red Pool that saw the other three teams tie with records of 2-1 each, while Gillespie narrowly lost a match-up with Carlinville, 35-31, after two blowouts in their first two games.

The close call the day before may have given the Miners some momentum going into the seventh place game on Dec. 30, as they picked up a 58-22 win over the Lady Lancers.

Gillespie held Lincolnwood to single digits in all four quarters, taking a 12-3 lead after one. The bulk of the Miners’ lead came in the second and third quarters as they added 14 points to their lead in each frame, outscoring Lincolnwood 20-6 in the second and 21-7 in the third to lead 53-19 going into the fourth.

Lincolnwood outscored Gillespie in the final eight minutes, scoring six points despite a running clock due to the 30-point mercy rule.

Haelee Damm led Lincolnwood with seven points, while Taylor Lush came off the bench to add in five points for the Lancers. Lilly Terneus chipped in three points, while Sophia Foster, Taryn Millburg and Cora Stevens had two each.

Gillespie was led by Madison Niemeyer with 18 points and Mia Brawner with 11 points. The Miners had 21 field goals, compared to seven for the Lancers, and went 15-for-30 from the free-throw line. Lincolnwood, who didn’t hit a three in the game but still had their second highest point total of the tournament, went 8-for-14 from the free-throw line.

Lincolnwood, now 1-13 on the season, will be back in action on Monday, Jan. 3, when they host the Purple Panthers of Litchfield High School in a varsity only contest at 6 p.m.
