Mrs. Harmon was born on Feb. 6, 1934, in Litchfield, one of eight children of Martin L. Kalaher and REBA (Kahle) Kalaher. She was of the Catholic faith and a very devout active member of Holy Family Parish and was a Springfield Dioceses woman of distinction in 2021.
On May 6, 1950, she married William (Bill) Roy Harmon and they spent 69 wonderful years together working side by side until he preceded her in death in January of 2020, missing their seventy-year milestone by four months.
Mrs. Harmon had a servant’s heart and was known as a sweetheart to everyone who knew her as she would do anything within her power for those in need.
Her two greatest passions in life were nursing and cooking. In 1972, she went back to college and acquired her RN nursing degree. For the majority of her nursing career, she was employed at St. Francis Hospital as a home health care nurse and also at St. John’s in Springfield. She always loved to cook and was extremely good at it with her own secret recipes. In 1980, she and her husband started Harmon’s Country Catering providing food, their fried chicken that they were known for, beverages, wedding cakes and decorations serving the local area and beyond. In 2000, they retired, sold the business and moved to Hillsboro to be closer to their son, John.
Mrs. Harmon always considered herself blessed with a large family, telling everyone that she had three children, seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She loved them all and was affectionately referred to by all her grands as Grandma Maggie; each one believed that they were her favorite.
She is survived by her children, John (Sally) Harmon, Robert (Beth) Harmon and Dr. Janice (Charles) Harmon Saucier; grandchildren, Craig (Amber) Harmon, Kerby (Brianne) Harmon, Tessa (Spencer) Pulliam, Kyle Harmon, Josh (Amanda) Gorsage, Holly (Randy) Leetham and Meghan (Greg) Harmon Bishop; great-grandchildren, Carlee, McKenna, Henry, Reed, Ruby, Ripp, Jameson, Graham, Abigail, Elijah, Canaan, Gabe, Rocco, Silas, Israel and Indi; and siblings, Marilyn (Bill) Morgan, Terry (Nancy) Kalaher and Bill (Janice) Kalaher.
Mrs. Harmon was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Harmon; parents, Martin Sr and Reba Kalaher; brothers, Martin (Marie) Kalaher Jr. and Gerald (Carol) Kalaher; sisters, Maribel Birkencamp and Marcella (Kenneth) Crawford; and granddaughter, Meghan Harmon Bishop.
