Lincolnwood Drops Two At Home

Posted

After a close game in their season opener against Bunker Hill, the Lincolnwood girls basketball team ran into some tough competition on Nov. 18 and 19 at the Woodshed in Raymond.

The Lancers hosted Gillespie on Thursday and fell to the Miners 53-16, then took a tough Camp Point Central/Augsta Southeastern co-op squad on Friday and were held to a 56-2 defeat.

Gillespie jumped out to a 15-4 lead on Thursday, getting 10 points from Madison Niemeyer. Four of Niemeyer’s 10 points came from the free-throw line as the Miners shot 12 charity tosses in the opening eight minutes, making seven. Avery Pope and Amanda Seelbach had a field goal each for the Lancers.

The Miners continued to pour it on in the second, outscoring Lincolnwood 17-4, with Niemeyer leading the way with eight points in the quarter and 18 in the half.

Gillespie scored the first seven points of the quarter before an Avery Pope bucket cut the lead to 22-6. That would be the last Lincolnwood basket for more than five and a half minutes as Gillespie went on a 10-0 run that ended with Mary Anderson’s layup in the final five seconds to make it 32-8 at halftime.

The Lancers kept Gillespie from adding much to their lead in the third as they scored seven points to the Miners’ nine, but a 12-1 fourth quarter finished off the rout for Gillespie.

Avery Pope had the lone Lincolnwood point in the fourth quarter and led the team with seven points in the game. Taryn Millburg had a third quarter three for her points, while Mary Anderson, Haelee Damm and Amanda Seelbach all had two points each.

Gillespie was led by Niemeyer, who finished with 25 points. The Miners were 17-of-24 from the free-throw line in the game.

On Friday, Nov. 19, the Lancers hosted Camp Point Central, who were playing Carlinville on Saturday and were looking for an extra game. The Panthers held the Lancers to just two points as they came away with a 56-2 victory.

The visitors led 16-0, 37-0 and 51-2 after the first three quarters, with Avery Pope scoring Lincolnwood’s only points on a pair of free throws with 5:06 to go in the third. Five points on a running clock ended the game as Lincolnwood fell to 0-3 on the season.

The Lancers will have some time off until their next game as they will wait 10 days to host North Greene on Nov. 29.
