Lancers Keep It Close, But Fall Twice

In their six games this season, the Lincolnwood boys basketball team has scored 290 points, an average of 48.33, while giving up 280, an average of 46.67. Those numbers should probably yield a record better than the Lancers’ 2-4 mark, but factoring in that all four losses came by fewer than ten points and you learn that numbers can be deceiving.

Lincolnwood’s latest two losses came against two solid clubs, MSM Conference rival South County and Macoupin County neighbor North Mac, and were proof that Lincolnwood is better than their 2-4 record.

Against the Vipers on Friday, Feb. 19, Lincolnwood hung tough, but South County chipped away each quarter for a 45-35 win.

The Vipers outscored the Lancers in each of the four quarters, but never by more than three points. Lincolnwood also only had one fewer field goal than the visitors, but hit ten fewer free throws and took 21 fewer chances from the charity stripe.

Braden Whalen, Will Jenkins and Devin Brown accounted for 29 of Lincolnwood’s 35 points, with Braxton Schmedeke, Zake Guzman and Cole Sidwell contributing two apiece. Whalen paced the team with 12, while Jenkins added nine and eight, hitting five threes between them.

South County was led by Luke Schumacher with 16 points, while Matt Crow added in ten.

Lincolnwood 62

The Lancers’ showdown with North Mac on Saturday, Feb. 20, in Girard was even closer as they fell to the Panthers 69-62 in overtime.

Lincolnwood came away with a 15-12 lead after the first eight minutes, with Braden Whalen netting six points, four from the free-throw line, while Devin Brown also added six with a pair of three-pointers.

North Mac caught fire from behind the three-point arc in the second quarter, with four different players hitting from outside to spark a 21-10 quarter by the home team. Coupled with five points from Austin Dohlman, the Panthers led 33-25 at halftime thanks to the surge.

Tanner Wilson would try to keep North Mac’s fortunes going in the third quarter as he connected on his third three of the game and scored eight of his team’s 13 points. Lincolnwood countered with an inside-outside attack led by Will Jenkins (two threes) and Devin Brown (one three) from behind the arc and Whalen (seven points) and Braxton Schmedeke (four points) inside it.

By the time the smoke cleared, 33 points had been scored between the two teams and North Mac’s lead had been reduced to one point, 46-45.

In the fourth, Lincolnwood got five points from Cole Sidwell and managed to eek out a one-point advantage in the frame to send the game to overtime at 54-54.

North Mac wouldn’t make a field goal in the extra period, but went to the free-throw line 18 times in the final four minutes. The Panthers would convert 15 of those chances to hand Lincolnwood their second tough-luck overtime loss of the season.

Again, Lincolnwood had just one fewer field goal than their opponents (19 to 20), but had 15 free throws to North Mac’s 21. Braden Whalen (19), Devin Brown (15) and Will Jenkins (14) all had season-best scoring totals for the Lancers, with Braxton Schmedeke and Cole Sidwell adding in seven apiece.

Tanner Wilson led North Mac with 25 points, while Matthew Hendricks and Cole Hatalla added 11 apiece for the Panthers.

Lincolnwood will look to rebound on Tuesday, Feb. 23, after back-to-back losses as they take on Pawnee on the Indians’ home floor in a varsity only contest at 7 p.m.
