Lancers Hit 30 Wins At Regional

Thirty-win seasons are pretty rare, even for a program that has 22 20-win seasons and more 950 wins in 48 years. Of the 690 schools who play volleyball in the IHSA, only 26 have 30 wins according to MaxPreps. In Class 1A, just seven teams hold that distinction, with one of the newest added on Monday night in Edinburg.

The Lincolnwood-Morrisonville volleyball team picked up their 30th win in 36 games on Oct 25, with a decisive 25-10, 25-10 victory over Mt. Olive in the quarterfinals of the Edinburg Regional.

The win marked the fifth time the program had reached the 30-win mark and impressively, the third time in the last six years, all under Coach Kimberley Denney.

Before Denney, who earned her 250th win of her career with the victory, the Lancers had two 30-win campaigns, in 2010 when they went 32-6 under Jo C. Dill and in 1996 when they went 35-2 under coaching legend Mary Hammersley, who is 50th all-time in IHSA history with 476 coaching wins.

Monday’s win was about as decisive as it gets as the second seeded Lancers served up, literally, the Wildcats a pair of 15-point losses. Lincolnwood went to the serving line 50 times in the game and did not commit a service error, marking the first time this season they had accomplished that task.

The Lancers’ two seniors, Desi Pitchford and Sidney Glick, led the charge with 11 points each. The pair also had 10 of Lincolnwood’s 16 aces, with Glick posting six and Pitchford adding four. Haelee Damm also had a hot hand at the serving line with seven points and three aces.

On the attack, Pitchford also came through big, posting a team-high seven kills. Hailee Belsher added four kills, with Damm (3), Jazmin Seaton-Hobson (2) and Glick (2) also contributing. Avery Pope and Tessa Funderburk split setting duties, with nine and eight assists respectively.

With 16 aces and a solid attack, Lincolnwood limited Mt. Olive’s own offensive opportunities. Any hits that did get through were handled by Glick, who had six digs, and company. Jasmine Vickery (5), Damm (4), Pope (3) and Belsher (3) also had multiple digs.

The win moved the Lancers into the regional semifinals against Nokomis, who defeated Edinburg on Monday night. The Redskins were one of five teams to take a set from the Lancers during the regular season and one of just two (along with Lutheran) to win one in a non-tournament game.
