Three of Lincolnwood’s first five soccer games this season have been decided by either one or two goals, but on Monday, the margin between a win and a loss was even smaller.
After tying in regulation 1-1, the Lancers and Athens would go to penalty kicks to decide the winner. The five-shot shootout is a difficult one for any keeper, regardless of experience level, but for Lincolnwood’s Will Jenkins, who was facing the spectacle for the first time, it had to be even more unnerving.
Ultimately, Athens senior Grant Lucas would come out on the better end of the overtime theatre, making one save to help his team win 4-1 in the shootout to take the match.
The penalty kicks came after Athens came back from an early 1-0 deficit, following a goal by Elijah Aumann that put Lincolnwood out in front in the first half.
Athens would answer before the break, getting a goal from Ryan Dorosheff to tie the game at 1-1. It would stay that way throughout regulation, with Wesley Gastorf, Iain Iocca, Peyton Isenhart and Lucas himself converting PKs to secure the win.
The loss dropped the Lancers to 2-4 on the season, but their goals for versus goals against ratio is only 10-to-11. They’ll have another tough test on Thursday, April 8, when they take on North Mac, who is 3-5, but with losses against Sacred Heart-Griffin, Carlinville, Pleasant Plains, Beardstown and Jacksonville.
