Lancers Bounce Back To Beat Spartans

Posted

After back-to-back losses by a total of five points, it was gut check time for the Lincolnwood boys basketball team on Saturday, Feb. 13. As snow fell outside the Woodshed in Raymond, threes rained down inside the Lincolnwood gym as the Lancers stepped up and hit eight triples in their 58-42 victory over North Greene.

Despite hitting three threes in the first quarter, the Lancers trailed 15-9 after eight minutes as the Spartans hit two threes of their own.

North Greene should have saved some of those points for the second quarter as Lincolnwood clamped down on the defensive end and yielded just one field goal and three total points in the frame. On offense, the threes kept falling with three more coming in the second quarter to give the Lancers a 22-18 advantage at the break.

The Lincolnwood defense stepped up again in the third quarter, holding North Greene to just six points as their four-point halftime lead grew to 15 by the end of the third. Both Will Jenkins and Braxton Schmedeke hit their second threes of the game in the quarter as they joined Cole Sidwell with two threes apiece.

The fourth quarter became a free-throw shooting contest, with Lincolnwood hitting 11-of-18 attempts and North Greene knocking down 10-of-19. For the game, the two teams would attempt 50 free throws and hit 28 of the chances.

The Lancers’ slight free throw advantage in the quarter echoed the final tally as they outscored the Spartans 19-18 in the final eight minutes to come away with the 16-point win.

Six different players had six points or more in the win, with Devin Brown and Cole Sidwell leading the way with 13 apiece. The 26 points showed that the seniors could step up after an off night, having scored just five combined points the night before.

Braxton Schmedeke and Will Jenkins added in nine and eight respectively, while Braden Whalen and Jhadyn Walker scored six apiece. Zake Guzman (two) and Ruger Brown (one) rounded out the scoring for Lincolnwood.

The Lancers will look to improve on their 2-2 record on Wednesday, Feb. 17, when they host Mt. Olive for a varsity only contest.
