Lady Redskins Dog Staunton For First Win

Posted

Three second quarter three-pointers helped Nokomis overcome an early deficit and build up a 12-point halftime lead en route to a 52-38 victory over Staunton in the Lady Redskins’ opening game on Saturday, Feb. 6.

The Skins led 8-5 after the first quarter, but Staunton, who co-ops with Mt. Olive for girls basketball, came back and scored six quick points to take an 11-8 lead a minute into the second frame.

The lead was short-lived as back-to-back baskets by Mia Fesser and Kristen Stauder pushed Nokomis back in front just moments later. Staunton would cut the lead to two on a three by Emilee Birdsell, but Nokomis outscored the Bulldogs 11-1 down the stretch, with Hailey Engelman, Natalie Engelman and Fesser raining down threes for a 27-15 halftime lead.

The hits would keep coming in the third quarter for the Redskins, as they scored the first seven points of the quarter to build their lead up to 19 points. They would finish the quarter with a 42-25 lead, with sophomore forward Audrey Sabol scoring eight of her game-high 18 in the third frame.

With a 17-point lead, Coach Brandon Engelman was able to get his reserves some playing time in the fourth quarter as all 12 players on the roster saw playing time in the 14-point season opening win.

In addition to her 18 points, Sabol also had 16 rebounds, six of which came on the offensive end. She also led the team in steals, swiping four of Nokomis’ ten takeaways.

Mia Fesser, one of three seniors on the roster along with Kristen Stauder and Jayme Johnson, added in 12 points with a pair of threes, while Emma Sneddon chipped in six points.

Sophomores Hailey Engelman and Natalie Engelman added in five points apiece, with Stauder and Johnson rounding out the scoring with four and two points respectively. Stauder led the team in assists with four, while also picking up three steals.

Staunton was led by Analise Best with 13 points, nine of which came off three-pointers, while Haris Legendre and Caidy Tuetken chipped in 11 and six points for the 0-1 Bulldogs.

Now 1-0 on the season, Nokomis will travel to Buffalo Monday, Feb. 8, to take on the Tri-City/Sangamon Valley co-op.
