Katherine “Kate” Irene Schmidt, 95, of Hillsboro, died at her granddaughter’s home on Sunday, June 7, 2026. A private family service is planned.
Born to Arthur and Pearl (Finn) Schmedeke on April 6, 1931, Mrs. Schmidt was raised on a farm in rural Irving and attended Irving School. She married Robert E. Schmidt on July 31, 1951, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Irving. They resided in Hillsboro their entire married life until Robert’s passing on January 9, 2008.
Mrs. Schmidt worked at various area businesses, retiring from the Hillsboro High School cafeteria. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Fusion Aquatics and the Hillsboro Moose Lodge.
Mrs. Schmidt is survived by her two children; one son, Randy (Carla) Schmidt; one daughter, Kathy (Kent) Stewart, all of Hillsboro; four grandchildren, Timothy Schmidt of Hillsboro, Brandi (Steven) Herter of St. Charles, MO, Kendal Stewart of Hillsboro, and Kadi (Larry) Gunderson of Grant Fork; four great-grandchildren, Colton and Maci Herter of St. Charles, MO, and Kaylynn and Kyler Stewart of Hillsboro.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Cecil Schmedeke; and an infant sister, Margaret Schmedeke.
