Joyce LaDon (Root) Flowers, 90, of Hillsboro, formerly of Vandalia and Fillmore, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024, surrounded by family at Hillsboro Health Assisted Living in Hillsboro.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Bethel Baptist Church in Vandalia, with the Rev. Joe Lawson and the Rev. Ben Foxworth officiating. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery in Fillmore. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7, two hours prior to the service at the church.

Mrs. Flowers was born Feb. 27, 1933, in East St. Louis, the daughter of the late Owen Root and Lucille (Behen) Donaldson. She moved with her family to Bingham where she attended grade school and moved to Fillmore where she graduated high school in 1950. She married Ernest Edward Flowers on Jan. 27, 1952, in Fillmore. They were married for over 68 blessed years.

Mrs. Flowers worked at her mom's restaurant. She enjoyed teaching sunday school and vacation bible school. She also enjoyed cooking and baking for others and loved gardening. Her spiritual gift was serving others and she served faithfully alongside her husband for many years. She enjoyed having family around and spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her sons, Mike (Marcia) Flowers of Celeste, TX, Rick (Debbie) Flowers of Mayfield, KY, John (LuAnn) Flowers of Bartlett, TN and Bruce Flowers of Emory, TX; daughter Tina (Curt) Hagemeier of Morrisonville; 11 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and sisters Norma Rickman of Fillmore and Nancy Savage of Edwardsville.

Mrs. Flowers was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church and/or Glendale Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Vandalia, IL, is in charge of arrangements. Online memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.millerfh.net.
