Hiltoppers Roll In SCC Opener

The Hillsboro girls basketball team picked up a decisive 60-20 win over Greenville on Thursday, Dec. 2, in the South Central Conference opener for both teams.

From the opening tip everything seemed to go in the Toppers’ direction. Defensively, Hillsboro held Greenville to single digits in each of the four quarters, limiting the Comets to just two points from Charlee Stearns in the opening quarter.

That defense turned into offense as the Toppers raced out to a 21-2 advantage after eight minutes. Alex Frailey caught fire early, scoring 10 points to lead the Toppers.

The trend continued over the next three quarters, with Greenville held to quarters of seven, five and six. The Comets were held to just seven field goals in the game, with no more than two field goals in any quarter.

All 11 Hillsboro players would see the court, with eight finding their way into the scoring column as the points were evenly spread out after Frailey’s first quarter explosion. Layne Rupert and Meagan White led Hillsboro in the second quarter with four points apiece, while Rupert also had four in the third quarter as Hillsboro outscored the Comets 16-7 and 16-5 in the frames.

Scoring slowed as the clock ran continuously in the fourth quarter, but Hillsboro still added one to their lead, with seven points from Addison Lowe (4) and Abigail Schreiber (3).

Hillsboro also outrebounded Greenville 38-14, with Meagan White and Layne Rupert pulling down seven boards apiece. Kenadie Carlock (5) and Sierra Compton (4) combined for nine of Hillsboro’s 13 assists, while Rupert had three assists and a team-high four steals.

Alex Frailey (13), White (11) and Rupert (10) all reached double figures, followed by Compton with eight, Lowe and Carlock with six and Abigail Schreiber and Sophia Blankenship with three.

Hillsboro’s next game is Monday, Dec. 6, against Alton Marquette in Hillsboro. The Explorers are 3-3 on the year with wins over Belleville Althoff, Columbia and Belleville West.
