Hiltoppers Face State’s Best At Dick Gerber Invitational

The Hillsboro boys golf team faced off against some of the best teams in the state on Aug. 27-28, as they competed in the 17-team Dick Gerber Invitational in Edwardsville.

The Toppers shot a 700 to take 11th in the tournament, matching the final score of Marquette, who was 10th. O’Fallon earned the win with a 616 for the two-day tourney, which was played at Oak Brook on Friday and Fox Creek on Saturday, while Breese Mater Dei (618) and Edwardsville (620) were second and third.

Drake Vogel and Preston Lyerla led Hillsboro on Friday, with a pair of 84s, while Dillon Smail also broke 90 with an 87. Dom Haggard had the fourth scoring round with a 90, while Tycen Tacker and Austin Loskot added a 102 and 121 in the fifth and six slots.

After the 90 on Friday, Haggard upped his game on Saturday with a lights out 10-over-par 82 on the challenging Fox Creek course. The second round gave Haggard a 172 for the tournament, 18 strokes away from Ryan Suhre of Edwardsville, who held the tenth spot individually with a 154.

Vogel added in a 94 for his second round, giving him a 178 for the tournament, while Lyerla shot a 95 and finished with a 179. Smail kept close with his fellow seniors, shooting a 181 for the tournament with a 94 on Saturday.

Thacker and Loskot finished their weekends with a 219 and a 246, shooting 115 and 125 on Saturday.

Overall medalist honors went to Vandalia’s Chase Laack, who shot an even-par 142 to beat Althoff’s Max Bruening by one stroke. As a team, the Vandals finished fourth with a 631. 

Hillsboro’s next match will be on Tuesday, Aug. 31, at 4:15 p.m. at Oak Terrace Golf Course in Pana, where they will take on the host Panthers and Altamont.
