Hillsboro Shows Lancers How It's Done

With two state trophies, more than 300 victories and just three losing seasons in the last 15 years, the Hillsboro girls basketball program is what Lincolnwood aspires to be. On Saturday, Feb. 27, the Lady Hiltoppers showed the Lancers what that’s going to take as they posted a 62-24 victory over their neighbors.

The day belonged to seniors Nikya Harston and Claire Tester, who started out by scoring 13 of Hillsboro’s 17 first quarter points to give their team an 11 point lead after eight minutes. The pair would continue to have success on both sides of the court throughout the game as they finished with 16 and 15 points, plus five steals for Harston and three for Tester. Harston also cleaned up on the boards, pulling in a team-best nine rebounds.

The Lancers would slow down the Hillsboro attack slightly in the second quarter, holding them to 12 points as they scored eight of their own, led by four from Cassie Krager.

Krager also had a good third quarter, scoring six more points, but Lincolnwood managed just one more basket and were outscored 22-8 in the quarter to give Hillsboro a 51-22 lead.

Brianna Guinn would lead Hillsboro in the fourth quarter, netting four points as the Toppers picked up win number eight with a 38-point win.

All told, 11 different players would score for Hillsboro, led by Harston and Tester combining for 31 of Hillsboro’s 62 points.

The other half of the total was spread equally as Layne Rupert added six; Sierra Compton, Haley Major, Vanessa Compton, Brianna Guinn and Kenadie Carlock chipped in four apiece; Sophie Blankenship and Alex Frailey each had two and Aly Schnarre knocked down a free throw for one.

As a team, Hillsboro shot 40 percent from the field, going 25-for-63 overall and 24-of-54 inside the three-point arc. Both teams would shoot well from the free-throw line, with Hillsboro going 11-of-15 and Lincolnwood making 6-of-8.

Cassie Krager had five of those free throws and finished with a team-best 11 points, while Avery Pope added in 10 points. Taryn Millburg came up with two points off the bench, while Sophie Rainwater had the other free throw to finish out the scoring.
