Hillsboro Rolls To 3-0 At Taylorville Tourney

The Taylorville Tournament is always a bit of a litmus test for the Hillsboro High School girls basketball team. A good result in the usually tough tournament bodes well for the rest of the season, while fewer wins means that Coach Bret Tuetken’s squad has some bugs to work out. The Toppers still have two of their tougher tests to go in Tornado Country, but so far, the results have been pretty stellar.

In their first three games, one on Nov. 19 and two on Nov. 20, Hillsboro is 3-0, with wins over Mt. Zion, Rochester and Jacksonville. The Toppers still have Civic Memorial on Nov. 26 in a battle of two 3-0 teams, before closing out the tournament against the host Tornadoes on Nov. 27.

In their opening game at Taylorville, the Toppers held a solid 28-20 lead at halftime, then put some distance between themselves and Mt. Zion as they came away with a 61-34 victory.

The inside-outside game was working early on for the Toppers as guard Layne Rupert knocked down a three and had two more field goals, while Alex Frailey and Meagan White combined for 10 points in Hillsboro’s 19-point first quarter. Rupert would continue to pour on the points in the second and third, eventually finishing with 21 points in the game as Hillsboro outscored Mt. Zion 9-7 in the second and 13-6 in the third.

The Toppers’ depth showed as six different players found the bottom of the net in the fourth quarter as Hillsboro outscored the Braves 20-8 and ran away with a 27-point win.

In addition to Rupert’s 21, which led all scorers, Frailey added 16 and White chipped in eight. Addison Lowe added in five off the bench for Hillsboro, while Sierra Compton contributed five, all coming in the fourth quarter.

On Saturday, Hillsboro opened up the day with Rochester, who had beaten Taylorville 56-29 the night before. The Rockets outscored Hillsboro in three of the four quarters, but a strong showing in the first quarter gave the Toppers a big lead and a 56-52 win.

Layne Rupert assaulted the nets in the first eight minutes, hitting two threes and scoring 10 of Hillsboro’s 19 points. Sierra Compton added in a three, while Alex Frailey and Meagan White chipped in four and two down low.

Down 10 after the first quarter, Rochester tried to reduce the opening deficit and were successful, but Hillsboro kept the Rockets from eliminating it entirely. The Rockets outscored Hillsboro 9-6 in the second, 15-14 in third and 19-17 in the fourth, but the Toppers hit 6-of-9 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off J.R. Boudouris’ squad.

Rupert, who hit two more threes in the third to give her four for the game, led the team with 23 points, while Alex Frailey added in 18. Sierra Compton finished with 11 points, while Aubrey Evans and Meagan White rounded out the scoring with two each.

After a five hour break, Hillsboro was back at it with their final game of the day against Jacksonville. The Toppers shut the Crimsons out in the first quarter and picked up their third win of the tournament with a 41-20 decision.

Hillsboro’s 41 points were their fewest of the season, but were more than enough as the Toppers held Jacksonville to quarters of zero, eight, seven and four.

Layne Rupert led Hillsboro in scoring for the fifth straight game, netting 15 points, but had plenty of help on offense as seven different players scored in the 21-point win. Addison Lowe scored six of her eight points in the fourth quarter, while Sierra Compton also had a late surge with all five of her points coming in the final frame. Kenadie Carlock and Alex Frailey each finished with four points, followed by Meagan White with three and Sophia Blankenship with two.

Next up for Hillsboro is Civic Memorial at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 26. The Eagles are also 3-0 with a 38-point win over Jacksonville, a 51-point win over Mt. Zion and a 19-point win over Taylorville to their credit. Civic Memorial is also the defending tournament champions, with a few key pieces returning from the 2019 squad that went 5-0 with an average margin of victory of 57 points.

The Taylorville Tournament wraps up on Nov. 27, with Mt. Zion and Jacksonville at 5 p.m.,  Taylorville playing Hillsboro at 6:30 p.m. and Civic Memorial taking on Rochester at 8 p.m.
