The Hillsboro girls golf team saved the best for last as they posted their best team score of the year at a triangular match in Carlinville on Sept. 28.
Just two days before regionals at Belk Park Golf Course in Wood River, the Toppers shot a 206 to beat out Carlinville by seven strokes on their home course of the Carlinville Country Club. Southwestern was also at the match, but only had two golfers and no team score.
Meagan Jorn paced the Toppers with a 9-over-par 45, which was good enough to tie for medalist honors with Carlinville’s Marlee Whitler. Jorn had one of Hillsboro’s four pars (all four players got one) and had a birdie on the par-3 fourth hole.
In addition to Jorn, Hillsboro also got a career-best from Sam Frailey, who shot par on the eighth hole to help finish off a 13-over 49.
Aurelie Granito also shot a season-best, posting a 57 with a par on the fourth hole, while Alex Frailey added a 55 to the cause.
The focus now moves on to the postseason, where Coach Son Clayton is hoping some of the momentum from Tuesday can carry over.
The first groups tee off at 9 a.m. at Belk Park, with the top three teams and the top 10 individual finishers not on those teams making it to the sectional at Acorns Golf Links in Waterloo on Oct. 4.
