Hillsboro Girls Avenge Loss To Comets

Posted

On Feb. 10, the Greenville Comets defended their home floor and scored a three-point victory over the Hillsboro girls basketball team in Bond County. On Wednesday, Feb. 24, it was the Hiltoppers’ turn to even the score.

Hillsboro jumped out to an eight-point first quarter lead, then held off the hard-charging Comets to score a 53-50 win in South Central Conference play. The victory was big for the Toppers, not only because it erased one of their two losses on the season, but also because it helped them improve to 3-0 in conference play this year.

Nikya Harston would start out hot for Hillsboro, scoring nine of the Toppers’ 15 points in the first quarter to help give her team a 15-7 lead. But foul trouble would hurt the Hillsboro senior later on and Coach Bret Tuetken needed to find new ways to score.

The answer would come in the form of three other seniors, Claire Tester, Haley Major and Vanessa Compton. In the second and third quarter, the trio would combine for 22 of Hillsboro’s 28 points, with both Major and Compton knocking down two threes each.

Despite the best efforts of the Comets, who hit three threes and got seven points from Natalie Iberg in the fourth quarter, Hillsboro would hang on for the victory over Greenville.

While Iberg led all scorers with 21, Claire Tester led Hillsboro with 13 points and six rebounds. Haley Major would eclipse her season’s best (eight in the first meeting against Greenville) to score 12 on the night, while Nikya Harston finished with 11 points and six rebounds, matching Tester for the team-high.

The balance of the scoring continued after that with Vanessa Compton adding eight, Layne Rupert scoring four and Alex Frailey putting back two.

The win knocked Greenville from the ranks of the unbeaten in South Central Conference play and kept Hillsboro’s hopes for a perfect SCC mark alive.
