Ceremonies concluded with a bang when the Hillsboro School District conferred diplomas on members of the class of 2021 during commencement exercises on a chilly Sawyer Field on Friday, May 28.
After a video presentation featuring classmates–grade school through high school–the event was capped with a fireworks display filling the sky over the football field.
"Life is like baking a cake," high school Principal Patricia Heyen said to class members in her final address to them. She advised to "mix, adjust, and explore" in life's kitchen.
Co-Valedictorians Sarah Huber and Kylee Pastrovich shared the microphone in remarks to their classmates, highlighting the class’s accomplishments and encouraging future success.
"Our class has shown to be quite motivated in working toward our goals," Pastrovich said. Huber advised to "keep doing what we have done growing up: adapt and persevere."
Both concluded by thanking teachers, administrators, and classmates. Huber, daughter of Don and Carrie Huber, will attend Illinois State next fall with an undecided major and a music minor. Pastrovich, daughter of Jake and Kate Wilkinson, will attend the University of Kentucky and major in biology and veterinary science.
Superintendent David Powell presented the class for graduation, Heyen introduced each class member, and Hillsboro School Board President Matt Lentz presented each with a diploma.
Graduates were led onto the field by junior class marshals Bryce Connor and Gavin Matoush, accompanied by "Pomp and Circumstance" played by the high school band. The high school chamber choir, band, and choir seniors performed to begin the ceremony before class Salutatorian Allyson DeVore led the Pledge of Allegiance. The daughter of Tom DeVore and Katya King, the salutatorian will attend the University of Missouri next fall and major in business administration.
In addition to awarding the valedictorians and salutatorian, Heyen also introduced five class members whose future plans include the United States military: Christopher Moore, Paige Roemelin, Nathan Lee, Riley Dugan and Mykenzie Loskot.
