Haggard Helps Hillsboro To Fourth Team Victory

Posted

For the third match in as many attempts this season, the Hillsboro boys golf team scored medalist honors as the Toppers improved to 4-1 with a win over Pana.

Playing at the par-36 Oak Terrace Resort in Pana, Dom Haggard would take the top spot with a 4-over-par 40. The Hillsboro junior, who also medalled in his team’s match at Litchfield on Aug. 25, had a strong final three holes, going par-par-birdie to end his day.

Preston Lyerla, Drake Vogel and Tad Daniels would be right behind their teammate, stair-stepping down with scores of 41, 42 and 43. Lyerla and Daniels both had three pars and a birdie in their nine holes, while Vogel may have had the most intriguing score line of the day.

The Hillsboro junior had just one par on the day, but made back-to-back birdies on holes six and seven. On the eighth hole, he triple bogeyed, but made up for it with an eagle on the par-5 ninth.

Dillon Smail and Devin Speiser would put in solid rounds for HHS as well. Smail would shoot a 44, good enough for the seventh best round on the day, while Speiser added a 48, for the eighth best round.

Pana’s Austin Karbach and Ryan Karbach were the only other players in the 40s as they tied Daniels for fourth overall with a pair of 43s.

As a team, Hillsboro would shoot a 166, beating the Panthers by 23 strokes.

Hillsboro will be back at Oak Terrace today, Sept. 3, as they take on the host Panthers, Greenville and Vandalia.
