Gary “Red” Dodson, 71, of Newton, formerly of Nokomis, died on May 6, 2026, at Carle Hospital in Urbana.
A ceremony will be held on Tuesday, May 12, at 2 p.m., with a visitation immediately following until 4 p.m. at Stiehl-Dawson Funeral Home in Nokomis, with celebrant Brandi Klughart officiating. Stiehl-Dawson Funeral Home in Nokomis is assisting with arrangements.
Born April 25, 1955, in Hillsboro, to Nova Edward and Gwendolyn Mae (Niesler) Dodson, Mr. Dodson grew up with a strong work ethic and a heart full of kindness. A graduate of Nokomis High School’s class of 1973, he devoted over 30 years as a skilled diesel mechanic with Ameren, touching many lives through his dedication before retiring in 2014.
On Nov. 25, 1978, he married the love of his life, Kathy Ann (Porter) Dodson, sharing decades of laughter, love and family joy.
Mr. Dodson’s heart was happiest when spending time with his grandchildren, swimming, playing ball or sharing simple moments of joy. His passion for Cardinals baseball and Blues hockey brought him endless excitement, just like drag racing, fishing and traveling. He was known for his quick wit and warm humor, his smile and good-natured jokes brightened the lives of everyone around him.
He is survived and will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Kathy; children, Aaron (Jill) Dodson of Effingham and Sarah (Michael) Sheahan of Katy, TX; treasured grandchildren, Madelyn, Colin and Conor Sheahan; beloved step-grandchildren, Evan Nerone of Champaign and Emma (June) Thomas of Quaker just outside of Sydney, Australia; dear sisters, Brenda Clavin of Nokomis and Joyce Stoddard of Quincy; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Sandy Gibson and Norma Niemi.
