Edwin Cox, 101, of Virden, died on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2023 at the Sunrise Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Virden, Illinois.
A celebration of Mr.Cox’s remarkable life will commence with a funeral service on Wednesday, Dec. 20, at 1 p.m. at Van Natta Funeral Home. Prior to the service, friends and loved ones may pay their respects during visitation starting at 11 a.m. Mr. Cox will be laid to rest in the tranquil grounds of Hillcrest Cemetery in Carterville.
Mr. Cox was born on Sept. 21, 1922, in Williamson County to the late Robert L. and Clara E. (Short) Cox. He embarked upon a remarkable journey through life. A devout member of the 2nd Baptist Church in Herrin, Edwin found solace in faith throughout his life’s journey. He was a gentle soul who graced this world with his presence.
In love and commitment, Mr. Cox married Mae Schack Cox on Nov. 18, 1939, and she preceded him in death on July 19 2015, just shy of their 76th wedding anniversary.
Mr. Cox is survived by his son, Larry (Elena) Cox of Arlington, TX and daughter, Barbara Gentry of Farmersville; grandchildren, Diann Josten of Herrin, Kelly Cox of Cahokia, Curtis (Amy) Gentry of Henderson, NV, Marcus Gentry of Springfield and Ricky Cox of Cahokia; great-grandsons Alex Gentry of Springfield and Dakota (Rachael) Josten of Herrin and great-granddaughters, Jorden, Julia and Emma Gentry, all of Springfield; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Cox will forever be held dear in the hearts of his loved ones, who were enriched by his presence..
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; brother Virgil; sister Juanita Harris; and precious son Jerry Cox.
