Doris J. Krake, 93, died on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023.
The family has planned a private family memorial with burial at Portales Cemetery in Portales, New Mexico. The family is being assisted by Hough & Sons Funeral Home in Hillsboro.
The daughter of Dae and Sara Waltman, Mrs. Krake graduated from Elmira High School and from Houghton College in New York (B.S.) and from Sangamon State University in Illinois (M.S.). After her marriage to Wesley J. Krake in 1957, she and Wes lived in California, Oregon, Oklahoma, and Illinois.
Mrs. Krake spent the majority of her life teaching. She was an elementary teacher in Los Angeles, California and in Springfield, Illinois. While teaching at Jane Addams Elementary, she was selected as the best elementary school teacher in the 1987 Illinois Times - Best of Springfield edition.
She enjoyed sharing her knowledge of all things fabric with others. Mrs. Krake taught quilting classes and was a founding guild member of Q.U.I.L.T.S (Quilters United In Learning, Teaching and Self Improvement.) She also shared her passion for history with her students and her community. She spent time as a volunteer at Clayville Historic Site, giving others the opportunity to step back in time and experience patchwork and quilting.
Mrs. Krake was an active member of Knox Knolls Free Methodist Church in Springfield. She taught Sunday School and played piano for many years. She enjoyed traveling across the country and visiting family.
She is survived by her children, Ken (Diana) Krake, Karen (Rick) Brown, Sara (Danny) Sadler; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law Ruth; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, her two brothers, and her great-grandson.
