Donald Joseph "Popeye" Settles Sr., 50, of Litchfield,  died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2023, at his residence in Litchfield.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, Nov. 30, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Litchfield Family Funeral Service home in Litchfield. Funeral services will follow at 5 p.m.

Mr. Settles was born April 28, 1973, in Litchfield, a son of Ronald Lee and Janet Sue (Wendel) Gelsinger. He married Jamie Lasko on May 6, 2010, at The Point at Lake Lou Yaeger.

A graduate of Litchfield High School with the class of 1991, he joined the Navy, where he served as a gas turbine mechanic and served in Desert Storm. He had worked at Menell Milling in Mt. Olive and was last employed as a union miller at Olin Brass in Alton.

A member of the Litchfield VFW, he was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers, NASCAR and the St. Louis Cardinals, a love he shared with his daughter, Isy. His favorite holiday was the 4th of July, and he loved fireworks and making sure his son Dalton always had the best birthday. ‘Donnie Jo’ was always the life of the party and loved entertaining everyone around him. He loved his family and friends deeply.

Mr. Settles is survived by his spouse, Jamie Michelle Lasko of Litchfield; mother, Janet Sue Gelsinger of Carlinville; daughter, Brittany (fiancé Zachary Cook) Settles of Pekin son, Donald "DJ" (Mary'a) Settles, Jr. of Spring, TX, daughter, Isabelle Lasko of Gillespie and son, Dalton Settles of Litchfield; grandchildren Skylar, Cayden, Eva, Karson, Rylie, Hunter, Carrie and  Breyer; brother, Robert Settles of Missouri, sister, Joanna (Paul) Maberry of Litchfield, sister, Sharon (Tom) Stoecker of Worden, brother, Johnny (Stanett) Settles of Litchfield and brother, Ronnie (Sarah) Gelsinger of Litchfield; father-in-law, John (companion Erika) Lasko of Litchfield; sister-in-law Kathleen (companion, J.W.) Lasko of Litchfield; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Mr. Settles was preceded in death by his father, Ron Gelsinger, in 2009.
