Daniels Grabs Top Spot In Toppers Season Debut

After the Hillsboro girls golf team welcomed their new coach to the start of the season on Tuesday, the HHS boys golf team had their chance to play under their new leader on Thursday, Aug. 20, at the Hillsboro Country Club.

Jim Luckett, who was an assistant under Jeff Eickhoff, took over the reins of the program this season and welcomed a solid group of six who performed well in the shadows of the stellar senior class that graduated in 2020.

While most of the team played mainly a JV schedule last season, there is some varsity experience on the roster, including Tad Daniels, who was medalist for Thursday’s season opener.

Daniels would card a 1-over-par 37 on the day to beat out Vandalia standoutChase Laack by two strokes. Daniels and Laack would be the only two players in the 30s for the match, with third place going to Vandalia’s Dylan Halford with a 41.

Drake Vogel would give Hillsboro a solid second score with a 42, while Dom Haggard and Devin Speiser added in a 43 and a 45 to the scoring. Preston Lyerla (48) and Shaw Riggs (66) would round out the top six for the Toppers.

As a team, Hillsboro would shoot a 167, finishing second in the triangular that also included Pana. The Vandals would take first with a 164, putting all six players between 39 and 46 strokes, while Pana was third with a 210, led by Austin Karbach with a 43.

Hillsboro will be at Litchfield Country Club on Tuesday, Aug. 25, for their next match, with the Williamsville Bullets joining the Toppers and Purple Panthers.
