Twelve young golfers from Montgomery County, plus two Morrisonville golfers who play for the Lincolnwood co-op team, participated in this year’s Drysdale Junior Golf Tournament in Springfield, sponsored by the Springfield Park District and Kone Elevator.
Four of the 14 would play on the tournament’s final day, with all four taking second.
Two of the four runner-up finishes would come in the 14 and 15-year-old grouping at Bunn Golf Course. Brawly Jacobs of Litchfield would take second in the second flight, while Brady Schmedeke of Morrisonville was second in the third flight.
That age division was full of county players, with six hitting the links at Bunn. Litchfield’s Tug Schwab had the best preliminary round of the half dozen and made it to the Championship Flight. Keagan Marten, Ian Otto and Zach Boston all from Litchfield, also played, with Marten in the second flight and Otto and Boston playing in the third flight.
Litchfield High School girls golf MVP Laura Boston was on the girls’ side of the 14 and 15-year-old class and also made it to the championship flight. She would win her first match before falling to eventual champion Addison Eades.
Braxton Schmedeke of Morrisonville would round out the players at Bunn as he took second in the second flight in the 16 and 17-year-old class.
The other six players were at Bergen Golf Course for their Drysdale Experience, with two playing in the 8-to- 10-year-old division and four playing in the 11-to-13-year-old grouping.
In the 11-to-13-year-old division, Bryce Gillock of Nokomis would take second in the fourth flight, which also featured Kamden Marten of Litchfield. Colton Weiss of Hillsboro played in the championship flight and made it to the semifinals before falling to Luke Leverenz, while Walker Stewart made it to the semifinals of the second flight.
In the 8-to-10-year-old class, Eli Miller played in the first flight after shooting a 59 in the preliminaries, while Brylan Marten played in the second flight following an 80 for his opening round.
The five Marten and Boston golfers were joined by their grandparents, Paulette and Tony Marten, who celebrated their 52nd anniversary on Monday, July 13.
