Charles Avis Nowlan, 84, of Coffeen, died on June 9, 2026, at Rose Garden of Pana Nursing Home in Pana.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 13, at Toberman-Dean Funeral Home in Coffeen. Burial followed at Shiloh Cemetery in rural Coffeen.
Mr. Nowlan was born in Coffeen on Feb. 9, 1942, the son of John Henry and Ila Lavera (nee Bowles) Nowlan. As the oldest of nine children, he learned early the values of responsibility, hard work and family. He was raised in the local community, attended local schools and graduated from high school.On Sept. 17, 1961, he married the love of his life, Elsie Schwiering. Together they spent 59 years building a loving home and raising two sons, Dennis and Dean.
He worked for CIPS as a welder repairman, where his strong work ethic and knowledge led to several professional certifications. He was known as a tireless worker, often putting in 16-hour days to provide for his family.
A lifelong member of the Coffeen Free Methodist Church, Mr. Nowlan’s faith guided him throughout his life. He was also a member of the Royal Neighbors of America and the Coffeen Senior Center. He was blessed with a heart of gold.
Outside of work, he had a passion for old cars and enjoyed attending car shows whenever he could. As a member of a local car club, he treasured the friendships he made while sharing stories and memories about old times. More than anything, he cherished his family. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchild.
Mr. Nowlan is survived by his sons, Dennis (Kim) Nowlan of Oak Forest and Dean (Tina) Nowlan of Coffeen; grandchildren, Carrie Greenwood, Micheal (Michelle) Greenwood, Meagan (Austin) Thralls and Lucas Nowlan; siblings, Dale (Linda) Nowlan, Roberta Wilson, Ava (Larry) Lawler, Lavera (Jerry) Beasley, Lois Jean (Bill) Gottman, John (Janice) Nowlan, Marti (Bill) Garrett and Robert Nowlan; great-grandchildren, Katie, Ronan, Veronica, Victoria (Mitchell) and Bristol; and several family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie; parents, John Henry and Ila; and brother-in-law, Dean Wilson.
