After surviving a two-week span where their roster was down to just 10 players, the Hillsboro High School softball team hoped that their COVID woes were behind them. Unfortunately, they were not.
The Toppers started regional play on Wednesday, June 2, at Carlinville and fell to the Cavies by a 10-0 final score. The game was expected to be a challenging one, due to the Cavies already owning a 6-0 victory over the Toppers from May 25, but the odds for a Hillsboro win took a hit when it was determined that starting pitcher Taelyn Smith would be unavailable due to COVID protocols.
Still, Hillsboro was determined to give it their best shot against the Cavaliers and were neck and neck with the home team for the first three innings. Meagan Jorn moved in to the pitcher’s mound from right field for the game and gave up just two runs on five hits in the first three innings, with two strikeouts to her credit.
The Hillsboro offense tried to help her out as runners made their way into scoring position in all three innings, but Hillsboro would strand seven on the bases in the first three frames and 10 total base runners in the game.
In the bottom of the fourth, Carlinville broke things open, sending 10 batters to the plate, six of which scored. The 8-0 lead made a 10-run mercy rule win for the Cavies a possibility going into the fifth and a reality as the inning progressed, with Carlinville scoring two more runs on a pair of singles and a walk to end the game early.
The Cavaliers would outhit Hillsboro 10-4, with Summer Smith picking up three of the four Topper base hits. Aubrey Evans had Hillsboro’s other hit, a second inning single.
Jorn would finish the game with three strikeouts and three walks, giving up 10 runs, seven of which were earned.
With the loss Hillsboro finishes the season with a 2-15 record. They will lose seniors Haley Major, Ally Devore and Erin Moore to graduation, but should bring back a team with much more experience in 2022.
