If you took all six scores into account, the Lincolnwood-Morrisonville boys golf team would be MSM Conference champions for the fifth straight year. But with only four scores going to the team total at the conference tournament at Edgewood Golf Course in Auburn, South County was just a little bit better than the Lancers on Wednesday, Sept. 8.
Lincolnwood shot a 370 as a team at the MSM Conference Tournament, good enough to beat third place Mt. Olive (484), but not quite enough to keep the Vipers from their first conference championship since 2016.
The Waverly-Franklin co-op program shot a 357 on the day, led by the trio of Tanner Frye (83), Logan Smith (84) and Brandt Crews (89), who finished second, third and fourth individually. Trevor Colwell added in the fourth score for South County, a 101, which was 11th best individually.
While they didn’t pick up the tournament win, the Lancers did boast the top individual as Nate Brockmeyer fired a 9-over-par 80 to take the top spot.
Brockmeyer shot an even-par 36 on the front nine, with three birdies, three pars and three bogeys. The round was the best of any of the 17 golfers in the field and the three birdies were more than everyone else combined (Frye and Smith had one each for the only other birdies).
The Lincolnwood junior was nearly as good on the back nine, sinking four pars and shooting a 44, the fourth best round on the back nine behind Blake Dickerson of Mt. Olive (43), Smith (43) and Frye (42).
Brady Schmedeke joined Brockmeyer as an all-conference honoree, placing fifth with a 92 for the tournament. Schmedeke shot 46 on both halves of the course, with three pars on the front nine and two more on the back half of the course.
Dickerson, who also shot a 92, finished sixth to grab the final all-conference spot, but Levi Weir and Colton Tischkau finished tied for seventh respectively, shooting a pair of 99s for the Lancers. Weir had four pars on the front nine and three on the back nine, for rounds of 51 and 48 respectively, while Tischkau reversed those numbers with a 48 on the front and a 51 on the back and five pars.
Lincolnwood’s fifth and sixth men, Will Jenkins and Michael Graham, tied for ninth, a stroke behind Weir and Tischkau. Jenkins shot a 47 on the front half of the course and a 53 on the back nine, with four pars on the day, while Graham shot a 48 on the front and a 52 on the back, with one par on each half of the course.
All told, the Lincolnwood six would have 31 pars, nine more than South County’s six and 20 more than the five Mt. Olive golfers. Adding up all six scores, the Lancers were 15 strokes better than the Vipers, shooting a 570 to South County’s 585.
