Carroll G. Merritt, 80, of Morrisonville, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2018, at his home. 

A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., on Monday, Nov. 26, at the Hough Funeral Home in Raymond. Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Morrisonville Cemetery.

Mr. Merritt was born in Greenville on May 27, 1938, to Rupert and Mable Merritt of Smithboro. He was a veteran of the United States Army where he served in Korea and was later stationed in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. 

He married Linda JoAnn Siebert on Sept. 20, 1961. Following Mr. Merritt's discharge from the service, the Merritts moved to Morrisonville to raise their newly started family. 

Over the years he worked at Circle Steele and Ace Hardware in Taylorville, Stewart's IGA in Morrisonville, Wernsing's in Harvel, was a federal employee in Springfield and retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 2004. 

Following retirement Mr. Merritt enjoyed traveling around the country to visit his family and friends-his destinations included Alaska, Okinawa, Washington, DC, and Georgia. 

When he was not traveling, Mr. Merritt could be found around Raymond with his morning coffee crew and frequenting Arby's in the afternoons. Mr. Merritt was always quick to pull out the photographs of his children and grandchildren that he carried around in his shirt pocket, happy to show them off with pride every chance that he got.

He is survived by a son, Mike (Kathy) Merritt of Warner Robins AFB, GA; a daughter, Michelle Kunkler of Taylorville; six grandchildren, Steven M. (Kourtney) Kunkler of Chatham, Jacob M. Merritt of North Pole, AK, Zachary B. (Jaclyn) Kunkler of Columbus AFB, MS, Justin M. Merritt of San Antonio, TX, Cody A. (Ellie) Kunkler of Sharpsburg, Kevin M. Merritt of Warner Robins AFB, GA, and one great-granddaughter, Emrie Lyn Kunkler; two sisters, Grace Haynes and Genevieve (Robert) Mayberry; one brother, John (Lynne) Merritt; a sister-in-law, Sally (Mick) Broaddus; two brothers-in-law, Maurice (Ann) Siebert and Norman (Jeana)  Siebert; and several nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Merritt; parents, Rupert and Mable Merritt; mother-in-law, Opal Eller Siebert; father-in-law, Carl Siebert; sister, Norma Jean Moore; brothers, Robert Merritt and Clifford Merritt; sister-in-law, Lucille Snow; and brothers-in-law, Carl Dean Siebert, Kenneth Siebert and Daniel Siebert.
