Win Streak Grows To Six For Lady Redskins

The month of December continues to be kind to the Nokomis girls basketball team as the Redskins defeated Pawnee 45-20 for their sixth win in a row and their fifth in the final month of 2021.

It took some time for both teams to find the bottom of the net, but a three by Addison Dangbar gave Nokomis the first lead of the game. Good things would continue to come in threes in the first quarter for the Redskins as Dangbar added a second triple and Hailey Engelman knocked down a third as Nokomis led 15-5 after one quarter.

Scoring was stagnant for both teams in the second as each netted just six points in the quarter to make it 21-11 at halftime. Audrey Sabol scored five of Nokomis’ six points (Emily Cress had the outlier) and finished the half with nine points to lead all scorers.

Sabol and the ‘Skins were far from done though. The junior forward tacked on five more points in the third frame, going 3-for-4 from the free-throw line, while her teammates assaulted the nets from beyond the arc and on drives to the basket. Natalie Engelman and Hailey Engelman both hit threes in the quarter, while Hailey and Emma Sneddon also had twos to give Nokomis 15 for the quarter.

Pawnee was held to just two points in the third as they saw the deficit go from 10 points to 23 in eight minutes.

Up 36-13 going into the fourth, the Redskins continued to outpace Pawnee. Natalie Engelman hit her second three of the game to give Nokomis six threes on the night, while Sneddon and Cydney Bertolino also hit baskets.

Sabol added in a free throw in the fourth quarter to finish with 15 points, her 11th double digit game of the season. The Redskins’ leading scorer and rebounder also had 10 boards, marking her fourth double-double of the season and second in as many games. If that wasn’t enough, Sabol also led the team in assists (5), steals (6) and blocks (1) in the win over Pawnee.

It was far from a one-player show, though. Hailey Engelman finished with nine points and five rebounds, while Addison Dangbar and Natalie Engelman added in six points apiece. Of the trio’s combined 21 points, 18 came from behind the three-point arc.

Emma Sneddon added in four points, while Emily Cress (3) and Cydney Bertolino (2) rounded out the scoring for the 9-3 Lady Redskins.

Nokomis has two more games this week before a nine-day break before the Carlinville Holiday Tournament. The Skins will host the Hatchets of the Windsor/Stew-Stras co-op on Thursday, Dec. 16, followed by a varsity only contest on Dec. 18, at 1 p.m. in Mt. Olive.
