William Edward Steiner, 76, of Litchfield, died at 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2022 at his residence.

Graveside services will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery at a later date. Plummer Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mr. Steiner was born on June 17, 1945, in Granite City, a son of Edward William and Frances Steiner. He married the former Mary Kay (Hines) Hahne on Oct. 28, 1972. Mr. Steiner served in the United States Army for nine years during the Vietnam War era.

He was a 1963 graduate of Madison High School and later continued his education at Lincoln Land Community College and the University of Illinois at Champaign. Mr. Steiner was a police officer for the city of Madison. He was later employed by the Illinois Department of Corrections at the Taylorville Correctional Center. Mr. Steiner was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Madison and the VFW Post #3912 in Litchfield. He raised and showed horses and coached soccer for several years.

Mr. Steiner is survived by his wife; two sons, Robert (Debbie) Steiner of California and Christopher (Bobbi Jo) Steiner of Litchfield; three daughters, Cherie Hahne of Granite City, Caroline Steiner and Sandra Bardsley of New York, NY; one sister, Patty (Richard) Anderson of Granite City; ten grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marie Beasley; and infant grandson, Chase Steiner.
