William “Bill/Weedzy” A. Jones, 93, of Coffeen, died on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2025, at St. Johns in Springfield.

A funeral service will take place on Friday, Jan. 24, at the Toberman-Dean Funeral Home in Coffeen, beginning at 12 p.m. A visitation will start at 11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will be held in Olive Hill Cemetery in Coffeen.

Mr. Jones was born on Feb. 11, 1931, in Coffeen, to his parents Tom and Lizzie (Coffey) Jones. He graduated from Coffeen High School with the class of 1951. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and spent two years in France and Germany. He worked at the glass factory in Hillsboro for 42 years, retiring in 1994.

Mr. Jones played ball with the Coffeen town team and played fast pitch softball for the Coffeen Road Runners for years. He coached Little League and Pony League baseball teams, as well. His love of playing ball extended over to the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Team. Mr. Jones enjoyed raccoon hunting, and especially cherished that time together with his son Steve and good friend Russ Simmons. He had a passion for gardening, as well as, raising animals such as hunting dogs, pigeons, quails, rabbits and even had a pond for fish. Mr. Jones had a deep love for music, and he shared that love with his grandchildren who grew to also love the art of music. He also attended the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.

Mr. Jones married his high school sweetheart Beverly “Sue” Bess on May 8, 1954, in Taylor Springs, and she survives.

Mr. Jones is survived by his six children, Deanne Jones of Hillsboro, Sherrie White of Coffeen, Jeanne (husband Mike) Holden of Witt, Julie Jones of Coffeen, Steve (wife Jackie) Jones of Taylor Springs and Lisa (husband John) Casterline of Filmore; as well as several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Matt Jones; and three sisters and four brothers.
