Watson Honorable Mention For IHSFCA All-State Team

Post-season accolades continue to come in for the Nokomis High School football team after a successful 7-3 season and a second straight trip to the playoffs.

In November, Nokomis senior Jake Watson was named to the 16-player honorable mention list for the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association all-state team.

Defensively, Watson led the Redskins in tackles with 18 solo and 42 assists from his linebacker position. As a team, Nokomis posted two shutouts, held teams to 20 points or less in nine of their 10 games and held then-undefeated Pana to their lowest point total of the season, 17 points in week eight.

Watson’s senior year was his best offensively, too, as he racked up 804 yards, the second most on the team behind fellow senior Matt Hill. Watson led the team in rushing touchdowns with 12, scoring with 76 points and tied teammate Jake Johnson for the most 100-plus yard games, with four.

While Watson was the only Montgomery County player to earn all-state recognition, several other familiar faces from the South Central Conference were also selected. In 2A, Pana quarterback Max Lynch earned all-state honors, while Vandalia’s Matthew Hagy and Carson Ruot were honorable mentions. Also on the 2A list was Cooper Starks of North Mac, who will join the South Central Conference next year. The SCC also had a first-teamer in 3A, Carlinville wide receiver Carson Wiser.
