The Nokomis Lady Redskins clinched a share of the MSM Conference title on Wednesday, March 3, in Waverly with a 56-43 victory over the South County Vipers.
The difference in the game was the third quarter, as Nokomis turned a 29-23 halftime deficit around with a 21-3 frame after the break.
Only three players scored in the third for Nokomis, with Audrey Sabol creating the lion’s share of offensive opportunities with 11 points. Emma Sneddon would add in six points in the quarter, while Kristen Stauder chipped in the other four to give Nokomis a 44-32 lead going into the fourth.
To sew up the game, the Redskins went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line and outscored South County 12-11 in the final quarter to claim their eighth win of the season and fifth in MSM Conference play.
Sabol would finish with 19 points, followed by Sneddon with 13 and Hailey Engelman with eight, all of which came in the first half. Stauder (six), Natalie Engelman (five), Addison Dangbar (three) and Mia Fesser rounded out the scoring for Nokomis, who shot 53 percent from the field (21-of-40) and 71 percent from the free-throw line (12-of-17).
In addition to holding the scoring lead, Sabol also led the team in rebounds with eight, while Dangbar was second with four. Dangbar also shared the team lead in assists with four, matching Stauder. Hailey Engelman and Mia Fesser led the team in steals with three and two respectively.
Nokomis vs. Carrollton
Closing out a busy week, the Nokomis girls basketball team played their fourth game in six days as they hosted Carrollton on Saturday, March 6. A strong defensive effort by the Hawks sunk the Lady Redskins, who fell to the visitors 44-24.
Carrollton would hold Nokomis to single digits in all four quarters, with the Redskins’ top scoring output coming in the second, when they matched the Hawks 9-9. Both Kristen Stauder and Addison Dangbar would hit threes in the quarter, with Dangbar also hitting a free throw. Emma Sneddon had the other two points for the Redskins in the frame.
In the other three quarters, Carrollton would outscore the hosts 35-15, with Ava Uhles scoring nine of her game-high 14 points in those three frames.
Uhles’ 14 led a balanced attack for the Hawks, who got ten from Kylie Kinser and eight from Callie McAdams.
Kristen Stauder and Natalie Engelman led Nokomis with eight points each, with both players hitting a pair of threes in the contest. Emma Sneddon and Addison Dangbar would be the only other players to score for the Redskins, both contributing four points.
Monday starts another busy week, the final one of the 2021 season. Nokomis plays Father McGivney in Glen Carbon on March 8, followed by three home games against Pana on March 10, Metro-East Lutheran on March 11 and East Alton-Wood River on March 13.
