Velma Louise (Klaus) Kumpf, age 97, died  on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2020, at Bethesda Southgate nursing facility in St. Louis, MO.

Visitation for Mrs. Kumpf will be held on Monday, Dec. 7, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Kutis Affton Chapel, with services immediately following at 11 a.m. Interment will be at St. Paul Churchyard in Affton.

Mrs. Kumpf was born on May 21, 1923, to the late Glenn and Sophronia Klaus. She married Leonard Peter Kumpf in December 1944, and they were married for 76 years, until his death in 2004.

She grew up on her family’s farm in southern Illinois before moving to Alton to work at the St. Louis munitions factory, where she met her husband. Mrs. Kumpf retired as manager of Edison Brothers Shoe Store, before it closed operations in the mid-1990s.

An active member of Eden United Church of Christ until advanced age, Mrs. Kumpf enjoyed the fellowship of quilters, holiday cookie sales and morning worship. She also enjoyed embroidery, and her colorful embroidered tops were often quilted and gifted to her family, just as her own mother did for hers. During her last year at Southgate, Mrs. Kumpf’s bed was warmed by a crazy quilt made by her mother nearly 100 years ago.

As members of their neighborhood’s friendship circle for over 45 years, she and her husband enjoyed weekly dinners, vacations, and holiday outings together as a group. Over the years, she traveled to the beaches of Hawaii, Maryland, South Carolina, Florida and Europe. Although she always avoided the water because she couldn’t swim, despite many years of lessons at Indian Hills Swim Club.

An avid reader of romance novels, her own writing included travel journals and letters to her son when he moved out of state. She loved the color pink, flowers and her home, but most of all her family.

In addition to her husband and her parents, Mrs. Kumpf was preceded in death by her sister, Glenda Slightom, as well as numerous in-laws, relatives and friends.

She is survived by two sons, Henry Warren (Susan) Kumpf of Clyde, NC and Michael Glen (Barbi) Kumpf of St. Louis, MO; two grandsons, Kevin Michael (Kassie) Kumpf and Corey Glen Kumpf and great-grandson Cameron Michael Kumpf; her sisters Mary Herchelman of Raymond and Jean German of Mt. Vernon; nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins and many, many friends.

In lieu of flowers that she so loved, contributions are appreciated in her memory to Eden United Church of Christ, 8920 Eden Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63129.
