Two Toppers, Two Panthers Earn All-Conference Softball Honors

Posted

Two Litchfield players  and two Hillsboro players joined 33 of their fellow players from the South Central Conference on this year’s all-conference softball team.

Haley Major was a first team selection for the Hiltoppers, while teammate Sophia Blankenship and Litchfield’s Taylor Brakenhoff and Bella Roach were all third team picks.

Major capped off a sensational career by batting .347 in her senior season with 14 runs scored and seven RBIs, good enough for best and second best on the team. She also led the team in slugging percentage at .591 and stole a team-best seven bases.

Blankenship made an impact in her freshman season for the Hiltoppers, batting .341 with eight runs scored and a team-best 10 walks.

Like Major, Roach led Litchfield in batting going 10-for-28 in her freshman year for a .357 batting average. Roach was also slick with the glove, committing just one error and providing solid defense behind the plate for the Purple Panthers.

Brakenhoff batted .278 on the season, third best on the team and tied Roach for the team lead in extra-base hits with three.

Gillespie would have the most honorees with eight after the Miners completed a 9-0 conference mark in 2021.Vandalia (5-3) and Staunton (7-2) had six honorees each, while second place Southwestern (8-1) had five selections. Greenville (4-5) and Roxana (4-5) both had three picks each, while Pana (4-5) and Carlinville (2-7) had one apiece.

Fifteen of the 37 picks were seniors in 2021, meaning that there will be plenty of returning talent on the field in 2022.
