Tough Tourney Takes Its Toll On Nokomis

Before heading to the Altamont Tournament on Saturday, the Nokomis High School volleyball team squared off against Shelbyville on Thursday, Sept. 2.

Despite missing two key starters in Hailey Engelman and Audrey Sabol, the Redskins would take game one in a 27-25 thriller, but the Rams came back to win games two and three 25-20 and 25-13.

Freshman hitter Rean Ward stepped up to fill the gap left by Sabol’s absence and put down 13 kills and four blocks in an out break effort. Skylar Stewart also had six blocks, while Reaghan Jonas added three blocks to solidify the Skins’ defense at the net.

Addison Dangbar was second on the team in kills with four and led the Redskins in points with 10. Dangbar also had seven digs, fourth most on the team behind Natalie Engelman (nine) and Emily Cress and Presley Lamb, who had 13 each.

Lamb led the team in assists, with five, while Presley Mehochko added four. Engelman (five points), Carley King (three points) and Jonas (three kills) also contributed in the close loss.

Altamont Tournament

Saturday’s tournament in Altamont would be a learning experience for the still shorthanded Redskins, who finished 0-5 against a tough field. Both first place Cumberland and second place Vandalia were in to Redskins’ pool as the Pirates defeated Nokomis 21-10 and 21-17, while the Vandals downed the Redskins 21-16, 21-14. Nokomis’ other pool play game came against Greenville, who downed the Redskins 21-14, 21-16.

In bracket play, Nokomis faced Cerro Gordo/Bement first and fell 25-15, 25-14. With the loss, they earned another shot at Greenville and handled the Comets better than round one. Unfortunately, the South Central Conference foes would get the better of the Skins once again, winning 25-18, 25-21 to capture seventh.

Now 2-7 on the season, Nokomis will look to get back on track on Tuesday, Sept. 7, when they play Metro-East Lutheran at home at 6 p.m.
