It was a see-saw battle against a close neighbor on May 10, as the Morrisonville Mohawks played Taylorville at Memorial Field on Monday. Unfortunately, for the Mohawks, the Tornadoes hopped off at the bottom and left them plummeting back to earth as Taylorville rallied late for a 10-7 victory.
The first three innings would belong to the Mohawks as they led 6-0 after nine outs. Four of those runs would come in the bottom of the first inning as the Mohawks cobbled together four base hits, including RBI singles by Michael Jones and Cole Sidwell and a two-run double by Jhadyn Walker.
Morrisonville would add solo runs from Dominic Golitko and John Wolf in each of the next two innings, before Taylorville found the scoreboard with three runs in the top of the fourth.
Morrisonville wasn’t done scoring quite yet though, as they made it a 7-3 ball game when Will Jenkins reached on an error and later scored on a passed ball.
Then the wheels began to fall off for the Mohawks. Morrisonville starter Cade Bethard ran into trouble in the top of the fifth and yielded two runs before getting out of the jam. The sixth brought more trouble as the Tornadoes touched up Bethard and reliever Will Jenkins for three more runs to take an 8-7 lead.
Gabe Armentrout would come on to get the final three outs of the sixth, but would run into trouble in the seventh and two more runs would come around to score, making it 10-7 before Christian Tapia closed out the inning in relief.
Morrisonville made a valiant effort at a comeback in the bottom of the seventh as Lance Weitekamp and Jhadyn Walker singled to lead off the inning, with both moving up a base two batters later when Isaac Ferrill was hit by a pitch.
With the bases loaded and one out, Morrisonville had the go-ahead run at the plate twice, but weren’t able to get to Kamdin Jump, who coaxed two fly outs from the Mohawk batters to secure the win.
Morrisonville would outhit the Tornadoes 12-7 in the game, with Cole Sidwell, Jhadyn Walker and Cade Bethard all picking up two hits each. Bethard, Walker and Braden Whalen also had doubles in the loss, which dropped their record to a hard-luck 5-7.
The Mohawks, who played Arthur-Okaw Christian on Wednesday, May 12, will face Pana at Memorial Field on Friday, May 14, followed by a road trip to Staunton on Saturday, May 15.
