Toppers Win At Home, Lose Senior On The Road

Posted

Short two wrestlers due to COVID-19 protocols, Hillsboro knew that wins would be tough to come by in their matches at Beardstown on Wednesday, May 5. That would prove to be true as the Toppers wrestled well, but lost 41-21 to Camp Point Central and 42-34 to Beardstown. Unfortunately, the bigger loss came in one of the three matches Hillsboro wrestled against Illini West at the end of the night.

In one of the last matches of the night, senior Andrew Law suffered a season ending injury during a 152-pound bout against Lance Belshaw. Law picked up a win earlier in the night to improve to 4-2 on the young season, but even more than his performance on the mat, the four-year wrestler has been a leader for the Topper wrestling team. While his time on the mat is done for the year, his contributions off it will continue according to Head Coach Garrett Young, who said that he wants Law to be around the team as much as possible, serving in a student-coach type role.

Law’s win came in Hillsboro’s 42-34 loss to Beardstown, who they lost to by six points to start the season in Auburn. Wrestling at 145-pounds, Law defeated Alex Diem by fall at the 3:26 mark, one of two contested wins by the Toppers against Beardstown.

The other win came at 182-pounds, with Reese Morford beating Johann Avila by major decision 14-2. Hillsboro’s other points in the match came from Keegan Murray (113), Griffin Hughes (120), Ben Huber (126) and Marshall Hughes (220), who all earned six points from forfeit wins.

Beardstown would pick up four forfeit victories as well, plus three wins by fall to secure the victory.

In their match with Camp Point Central, Hillsboro won two of their seven contested matches and fell 41-21 to the Panthers. The victories would come from Griffin Hughes, who pinned Andrew Krus with a second left in the first period of the 120-pound match, and Marshall Hughes, who ended the night undefeated after a 9-6 decision win over Keagan Mercurio at 220 pounds.

Hillsboro scored forfeit wins from Keegan Murray (113) and Matt Page (132), but gave up forfeits at 152 and 160 to balance that out.

In the Illini West match, Page picked up his second victory of the night, pinning Jacob Carpenter with 40 seconds left in the match at 132-pounds.

Taylorville/Southeast

Despite the complications after the Beardstown dual, the Toppers came ready to wrestle on Thursday, May 6, when they hit their home mats for the first time this season. Hillsboro quickly dispatched a short-handed Springfield Southeast team by a 42-12 final, then beat Taylorville 48-18 to improve to 3-5 on the season.

Ten of the 14 matches against Southeast would be either double forfeits or forfeits in Hillsboro’s favor, with Keegan Murray, Griffin Hughes, Ben Huber, Matt Page and Jake Huber picking up six free points.

In the contested matches, Hillsboro split two-and-two, but wasted little time in the two victories. Tanner Clayton needed just 11 seconds to pin his opponent at 145-pounds, while Marshall Hughes was nearly as quick, winning by fall in 17 seconds.

Hughes improved to 8-0 on the season with a major decision victory at 220 pounds in the match with Taylorville, one of four contested victories against the Tornadoes in five matches. Tanner Clayton (138) and Matt Page (132) would both win by fall in the first period, needing just 32 and 66 seconds to complete the task, while Keegan Murray also picked up a pin 14 seconds into the 113-pound match.

In the other nine matches, Ben Huber, Griffin Hughes, Jaben Compton and Jake Huber won by forfeit for Hillsboro, with Taylorville picking up two forfeit wins and two matches going down as double forfeits.

The matches and overcoming adversity is all part of the learning process for the Toppers, who will wrestle at Carlinville Middle School on Wednesday, May 12, with Roxana also joining the fray.
