Toppers Score Bragging Rights Over Nokomis

With five of last year’s top seven scorers returning, the Nokomis girls basketball team is going to be hard to beat in 2021-22. But on Wednesday, Nov. 18, Hillsboro showed the Redskins that they still have some work to do before they can beat up on their neighbors to the southwest.

The Toppers outscored Nokomis 27-6 in the first and third quarters, which allowed them to come away with a 44-29 victory over the Redskins in Hillsboro. The win was Hillsboro’s ninth straight over the Redskins, who last beat Hillsboro at the Highland Tournament in 2014.

Hillsboro came out firing in the first, getting five points each from Layne Rupert and Alex Frailey as they built up a 12-2 lead. Nokomis was held without a field goal in the opening quarter, with Emma Sneddon knocking down a pair of free throws for the Redskins’ only points.

Free throws would be key for Nokomis in the second quarter as they clawed back into the game. Sneddon hit four more charity tosses, with Audrey Sabol and Emily Cress knocking down two each as the Redskins outscored Hillsboro 16-10. Sneddon finished the first half with 10 to lead Nokomis, while Rupert had nine for Hillsboro, who clung to a 22-18 lead at the break.

Nokomis got a three from Addison Dangbar in the first half of the third quarter, but the Toppers stretched out their lead in the frame. In the final four minutes Hillsboro outscored Nokomis 8-1, getting baskets from Rupert, Addison Lowe and Kenadie Carlock to build up a 37-22 lead.

Audrey Sabol ran into foul trouble to start the fourth quarter for Nokomis, which complicated matters more when she fouled out with 6:24 to play.

The Redskins tried to chip into the lead but got no closer than 10 the rest of the way out.

Emma Sneddon led Nokomis in scoring with 13 points, seven of which came from the free-throw line. The Toppers’ defense kept the Redskins sharp-shooters from three off balance, with Addison Dangbar’s third quarter three the only triple of the game. Dangbar finished the game with seven, while Audrey Sabol (4), Emily Cress (3) and Hailey Engelman (2) also scored for Nokomis.

Layne Rupert and Alex Frailey were both in double figures for Hillsboro, with Rupert leading all scorers with 19 and Frailey adding 13. Sierra Compton (5), Kenadie Carlock (4), Addison Lowe (2) and Meagan White (1) rounded out the scoring for Hillsboro.

The result moved both teams to 1-1 on the season as they entered play at the Litchfield and Taylorville Thanksgiving tournaments respectively.
